Stay safe and alert

WalkSafe is a free travel mobile app that allows you to walk safely without much worry. Developed by Chaperhome, this personal safety app features an interactive map that displays real-time news concerning the areas near you. This helps you stay alert in case any recent or ongoing crimes are happening nearby as you commute to and from your destination. This app was designed for teenagers in mind, but users of all ages can still use it.

Keep your loved ones informed

Not to be confused with the pedestrian safety app of the same name, WalkSafe focuses on commuter safety while traveling on foot near areas that have been reported to have had past crimes like knife attacks, muggings, and even sexual assault. With it, you can stay informed on the go about the locations or streets you’re passing through—and be able to choose a much safer route. Most of the data on the app comes from UK police reports. 

In case you’re feeling anxious while traveling, you can also use the app as a panic button of sorts—similar to how Noonlight: Feel Protected 24/7 operates. The TapSafe feature lets you do timely taps on the screen to let your registered “protectors” know your current status. These protectors can be either family or friends so in case you ever stop using the function before you get to your destination, they’ll be alerted of your last location.

Additionally, a feature called HomeSafe allows you to set a specific place you’re going to and a specific time you expect to lapse on your way there. In case this isn’t met, your protectors will be alerted, as well. Plus, the Check-in function lets you schedule a reminder for someone to check on you. However, while these features are great, the app still requires some improvements in its performance. It badly needs an in-app tutorial and FAQ.

Needs some more polishing

All in all, WalkSafe is a great app to use if you happen to live in the UK and commute often. It offers various features that enable your loved ones to be aware of your safety when traveling outside. It still lacks some basic functions like a built-in tutorial, though. Reporting crimes doesn’t work smoothly, as well, as it has area limits and sometimes even crashes. Nevertheless, this app definitely provides much-needed comfort for commuters.
