Protect yourself and your loved ones
WalkSafe is a free lifestyle mobile app that lets you travel without having to worry too much. Developed by Chaperhome, this travel app offers a real-time interactive map with live reports on crimes like knife attacks, muggings, and even sexual assault. This helps you plot a much safer route when commuting to and from your home. It also allows your loved ones to know if you’re safe, if they have to check on you.
Stay on guard while walking
WalkSafe’s focus is on commuter safety while traveling on foot. However, you shouldn’t confuse it with the similarly-named pedestrian safety app that alerts passersby of oncoming traffic. Instead, this app provides you information about any reports of past crimes around areas you’re currently near to. So, you can stay alert as you walk outside. Almost all of the data on the map is from UK police reports, as well as user reports.
If, while traveling, you happen to feel nervous, the app can become your panic button with its TapSafe function. Similar to how Noonlight: Feel Protected 24/7 can be used, you can use this feature to tap on the screen at set intervals to keep you focused. If you’ve registered your family and friends as “protectors,” they’ll also be alerted to your TapSafe status—and your location will be revealed in case you ever stop tapping.
Aside from this, the HomeSafe feature lets you set a specific place you’re going to and your expected time of arrival. This is so that your protectors will know if you’ve reached your destination safely. Meanwhile, the Check-in function lets you schedule a reminder for someone to check on you—either through a message, call, or face-to-face visit. However, the app still requires so many fixes to its performance. For once, it doesn’t have a built-in tutorial and FAQ.
Still has some serious kinks
Overall, WalkSafe is a nice app to have whenever you travel or do your daily commute. It provides you with a variety of features that can ensure your and your loved ones’ safety and ease everyone’s minds. However, while the features look great, they don’t perform as well as you’d hope. For one, reporting crimes can be a bit tricky since the app often crashes. There’s no in-app tutorial, as well, making the controls unclear.
